We’ve all wrestled with this question at some point: “How do I know if this is from God?”

Whether it’s a decision, a dream, a relationship, or an opportunity — discerning God’s voice can feel overwhelming in a noisy world.

But God is not a God of confusion. He is a God of peace, order, and purpose. And He wants you to recognise His voice.

1. It aligns with His Word

God will never contradict His Word. If you want to know whether something is from Him, start with Scripture.

Is this decision aligned with what the Bible says about His character, His commandments, and His wisdom?

His Word is the standard — not our feelings, opinions, or circumstances.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.” – Matthew 24:35

2. It brings peace, not confusion

God’s direction may challenge you, stretch you, or take you out of your comfort zone — but it will never leave you in turmoil.

There is a peace that comes from the Holy Spirit that reassures your heart even when your mind can’t figure everything out.

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…” – Colossians 3:15

If you feel pressure, panic, or fear — pause. God leads with peace, not anxiety.

3. It is confirmed, not forced

When God is in it, He brings confirmation — through His Word, prayer, wise counsel, and sometimes even open or closed doors.

You don’t have to manipulate the outcome. What is from God doesn’t need to be forced into place.

“By the testimony of two or three witnesses, every matter shall be established.” – 2 Corinthians 13:1

4. It glorifies Him, not just you

God’s plans always bring glory to His name. If the path you’re considering only builds your ego or comfort, it might not be from Him.

But if it draws you closer to Jesus, grows your faith, and blesses others — you’re likely walking in His will.

5. It draws you closer, not further away

The voice of God will always call you into intimacy, not away from it.

If a decision is pulling you from community, worship, prayer, or obedience — be careful.

The enemy loves to offer good-looking distractions wrapped in deception.

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27

Discerning God’s voice doesn’t come from striving — it comes from abiding.

When we walk closely with Him, His voice becomes clearer.

So stay in the Word. Stay in community. Stay in prayer. And trust that the God who speaks still speaks today.

You’ll know it’s Him — because His peace will follow, His Word will confirm it, and your spirit will know.
