There are seasons in life where your character will be tested more than your comfort.
In Acts 12, we see Peter imprisoned — bound by chains, guarded by soldiers, and facing what appeared to be the end. Yet, he slept peacefully. Why? Because Jesus had already spoken a word over his life in John 21: “When you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Peter knew his time was not up. His confidence wasn’t in his surroundings, but in the word of the Lord.
And just as the angel arrived, notice the sequence: the chains fell off before the prison doors opened. God always delivers the person before He changes the circumstance.
Joseph’s Test: The Coat and the Character
Joseph’s story in Genesis reveals a similar truth. His brothers stripped him of his colourful coat, but they couldn’t strip him of his God-given character. He was thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned — yet everywhere he went, the favour of God rested upon him.
They could take the coat, but they couldn’t take the call.
When Potiphar’s wife tried to entice him, Joseph chose righteousness over comfort. His integrity cost him his freedom, but it positioned him for the palace. The prophetic word over Joseph’s life was tested, but it was never revoked.
The Process Before the Promise
We often want the promise without the process, but Romans 5:3–4 tells us that tribulation produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Great faith is born in the tension of holding on to God’s word while everything around you says otherwise.
The word of the Lord over your life will be tested, not to break you, but to shape you into the person who can steward the promise.
Your Confidence in the Word
Like Peter, you can rest even in the prison cell when you know what God has spoken. Like Joseph, you can endure loss and injustice without losing your integrity.
When you face moments where life tries to strip you of something valuable, remember this:
They can take your coat, but they cannot take your character — and they cannot cancel the calling God has placed on your life.
Stand firm. The process is preparation. The One who spoke the word over your life is faithful to bring it to pass.
